The Chinese Academy of Sciences built a 100-meter air purifier in the middle of Xi’an. It does not rely on massive industrial fans. It uses greenhouses. Glass panels around the base trap solar energy, heating polluted city air until it rushes up the chimney and through a series of heavy-duty filters. It scrubs 10 million cubic meters of air every single day. The impact is measurable. PM2.5 levels dropped by 15 percent across a 10-square-kilometer radius. Now, they are drawing up plans for one five times the size.
