In 1958, Hong Kong had a critical problem. The city was surrounded by water but rapidly running out of it. It takes gallons of fresh drinking water to flush a standard toilet. So the city stopped using it. They built a completely separate, parallel plumbing network beneath the streets. Its only job is pulling water out of the ocean and pumping it straight into local bathrooms. Today, 80 percent of the population uses this system. It saves 300 million cubic meters of fresh water every year. A massive, invisible infrastructure project built to solve a problem that most coastal cities just accept as normal.
