Belgium’s Pairi Daiza Zoo has built the world’s largest wooden solar carport, transforming its parking area into a large-scale renewable energy facility. The structure is equipped with 93,786 solar panels and was completed in two phases, with the first opening in 2020 and the second expanding the project in 2023.
The solar carport generates approximately 39,800 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity each year—enough to supply power to more than 11,000 homes. Constructed entirely from Douglas fir timber rather than metal, it is one of the largest wooden solar structures in the world.
According to the zoo, the project has made the facility energy self-sufficient on a net basis, with about 30% of the electricity it produces being fed back into Belgium’s public power grid. The canopies also provide shade for thousands of parking spaces while supporting electric vehicle charging stations.
