I found this cleaning out my grandfather's kitchen. There are parts obviously missing because the two pieces on the side are hinged and probably secure a lid of some sort?

What would this be used for?

My dad said he found something similar on eBay listed as an index card holder but that just doesn't seem right to me.

I always wondered where to idealy stick on ducktape when there is a gap to bridge.

In the image, the ducktape must hold the car window in place, so the force up shall be maximized.

Is it better to have the duck tape in tension (like on the left) or to have more surface area (as on the right)? Is there like an ideal angle?
