China is entirely rewriting how higher education works. Under a new national law, doctoral candidates in technical fields can now submit a working prototype or industrial technology instead of a traditional academic thesis.
They still have to defend their work, but the grade depends on whether the thing actually functions in the real world. At least 59 universities have already made the switch. The immediate push is to speed up self-sufficiency in AI, semiconductors, and advanced manufacturing to counter Western tech blockades. But the model is moving so fast it is already creeping into agriculture.
They want market-ready solutions, not just more academic papers.
