Desalination is notoriously energy intensive. It normally requires massive coastal facilities and huge amounts of grid power. Spain is testing a way around that entirely. They built a floating solar array that handles both ends of the problem at once. The panels generate the power right on the water. That power runs the desalination process. As a bonus, sitting on the ocean naturally cools the solar panels, which actually makes them run more efficiently. It makes fresh water and clean power without taking up a single square foot of land.
