You have probably been told the Sun is a small star. That is misleading. The Sun is actually larger than roughly 90 percent of the stars in the Milky Way. Most of our galaxy is made up of red dwarfs—dim, compact things compared to the one we orbit. The confusion comes from the extreme end of the scale. When you put the Sun next to a red supergiant like Stephenson 2-18, our star becomes a mere speck by comparison. That supergiant has a radius over 2,000 times larger than ours. The Sun is not technically small. The universe is just capable of building unimaginable monsters.
