The touchscreen era of car design just hit a wall. China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has finalised a strict new mandate. By July 2027, carmakers must install real, physical controls for 19 safety-related functions. Turn signals, hazard lights, horns, wipers, and gear selectors must all be tactile. The rule is incredibly specific. The buttons have to be at least 10 by 10 millimetres. The vital detail? Every single one must continue to function perfectly even if the main dashboard screen completely crashes.
