For two centuries, the laws of thermodynamics have governed our world. They run your car engine. They keep your kitchen fridge cold. We built the modern industrial age on them. There was just one problem. The math was mostly an educated guess.
Thermodynamics has always relied on engineering intuition rather than precise fundamental proofs. It worked, so we used it. But now, physicists are going back to the foundations. Led by Bryan Roberts at the London School of Economics, they are rebuilding the math from scratch.
They are using ‘gauge theory’—a complex geometric framework usually reserved for quantum physics. They are finally establishing a mathematically bulletproof bridge between classical heat and work, and the subatomic world. It takes thermodynamics from a practical rule of thumb to a rigorously grounded science.
