United Airlines has found a new way to make money from a seat it does not even plan to sell.
On its new Airbus A321XLRs, the airline will block the middle seats in one Economy Plus row and cover them with a fixed table.
The four passengers sitting beside those blocked seats will get extra elbow room, more personal space and somewhere to place their drinks.
United is calling it an “innovation.”
Europe has been doing it for decades.
The setup is almost identical to European short-haul business class: regular economy seats, an empty middle seat and a small table placed between passengers.
But United is not selling it as business class. It will become a new Economy Plus option, with pricing expected to be revealed later this year.
In other words: United turns an empty middle seat into its newest paid upgrade.
There is also a financial reason behind the decision.
By limiting the aircraft to 150 passenger seats, United avoids crossing the next FAA staffing threshold that can require an extra flight attendant.
Fewer sellable seats, lower staffing costs—and a new premium product to sell.
So the airline gets to block seats, control operating costs and potentially charge more for the surrounding seats.
Brilliant business move—or another example of airlines charging passengers for something that used to happen naturally when a flight was not full?
A guaranteed empty middle seat could be very valuable on a long flight.
But would you actually pay extra for it?
Or is this just economy class with better marketing?
