Local community group posted this image on Facebook along with a message. This seems too outrageous to be true. Something about the neat arrangements of the fish also looks… fishy? Here is the text that came with it:
“Our local county maintenance staff has to clean up a lot of despicable things at the (Name) Community Park – but this is most egregious. Along with a dozen empty wine bottles thrown into the restroom, she found the toilet stuffed with at least a dozen of these fish. You don’t want them? Throw them back! The entitlement and disrespect shown here is unbelievable. Our local warden has been here. The waste of local resources is unethical, immoral, and quite illegal. The vast (vast) majority of people here would never do this; it’s the small percentage that cause problems.”

In 1974, a group of farmers digging a well near Xi’an, China, made one of the most astonishing archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. Beneath the dry earth lay a vast underground army built over two thousand years ago to guard the tomb of China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang. What they uncovered was no ordinary burial site but a meticulously constructed funerary complex featuring thousands of life-sized clay soldiers, each with unique facial expressions, hairstyles, and armour.
Dating back to 210 BCE, the Terracotta Army is part of a much larger necropolis designed to ensure the emperor’s protection in the afterlife. The site includes archers, infantrymen, charioteers, horses, and even non-military figures such as acrobats and musicians. Each sculpture is an individual masterpiece, reflecting an incredible level of detail and craftsmanship from the artisans of the Qin Dynasty. No two warriors are exactly alike, showcasing the remarkable artistry and planning involved in creating an eternal military force.
The army was built using modular techniques with separate moulds for heads, torsos, and limbs, which were then assembled and customised. Originally painted in bright colours, most of the pigment has faded over time, but traces of red, green, and blue still hint at the army’s once-vivid appearance. The level of sophistication in both engineering and artistry is a powerful testament to the capabilities of ancient China.
Today, only a fraction of the tomb has been excavated. Much of Emperor Qin’s mausoleum remains untouched, sealed under a massive burial mound that is thought to house priceless treasures and possibly even traps designed to deter intruders. The Terracotta Army continues to inspire new generations of historians, scientists, and visitors from around the globe.
Fun Fact: The tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huang is said to contain a miniature replica of his empire with rivers of mercury, which has made full excavation too dangerous with current technology.
