The Trump administration is delaying more than $1 billion in federal Medicaid payments to California and Minnesota as part of its ongoing effort to crack down on healthcare fraud, Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced Tuesday.
During a press conference, Kennedy said HHS is “not sending Medicaid or Medicare dollars out the door until we have confidence that they are being spent lawfully and appropriately.” According to an HHS news release, the payment delays are intended to support the administration’s ongoing effort to combat fraud, waste, and abuse in Medicaid while protecting federal taxpayer dollars.
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz said during the briefing that the days of fraudsters “stealing from the American taxpayer are over.”
