Sabiha Gökçen (1913–2001) was a Turkish aviator widely recognized as the world’s first female fighter pilot. Orphaned at a young age, she was adopted in 1925 by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey. In 1936, she became Turkey’s first female military pilot.
