Trapped and without telling anyone his route, he endured five days without enough water, facing certain death. On the sixth day, realizing his options for survival were exhausted, Ralston made the decision to amputate his trapped forearm to free himself from the boulder. Using a small multi-tool, he performed the procedure and successfully detached himself. Despite his severe injury, he managed to rappel down a 65-foot cliff and hike for several miles before encountering other hikers who assisted him until a rescue helicopter arrived.
His incredible ordeal was detailed in his memoir, Between a Rock and a Hard Place, and later adapted into the Oscar-nominated film 127 Hours.
