When I read Cryptonomicon, a passage stood out where Alan Turing was on a beach watching waves come in from across the English Channel. If I remember correctly, he wondered if Herman Göring could have sent a message to him in the waves and was thinking of ways to remove the random wave information or something along those lines. Supposing someone could generate a wave pattern strong enough to make it across the Channel, how much energy would that require?
