Sun Country Airlines is closing out its final chapter.

Allegiant confirmed the airline it bought for $1.5 billion will eventually vanish completely.

Once the FAA approves a single operating certificate — expected around 2028 — every Sun Country plane and route becomes Allegiant.

The name goes away for good.

Sun Country has been flying since 1983.

It was started by a group of former Braniff International crew members and grew from a small charter airline into the second-largest carrier at Minneapolis-St. Paul.

Along the way, it built a steady cargo business flying Boeing 737 freighters for Amazon.

One flight attendant, who has worked there for 39 years, told CBS Minnesota the news hit hard. She’s watched the airline grow from the ground up.

Allegiant says the transition will take years, not weeks, and that Minneapolis-St. Paul will stay an important base. But the Sun Country name itself won’t survive the merger.
