The science relies on completely rewriting the donor animal. Researchers edit out the specific pig signals that tell a human immune system to attack, while adding in human markers to manage blood clotting.
But it forces a direct collision between human survival and animal ethics. The drastic shortage of donor organs kills people every single day. If xenotransplantation becomes viable, society has to decide exactly how much ethical discomfort it is willing to absorb to stop those deaths.
