This is something you almost never see an airline do.

United Airlines is telling reservation agents that if a passenger doesn’t want to fly into the newly renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport (DJT), they can offer a flight to Miami (MIA) or Fort Lauderdale (FLL) instead — without charging a fare difference in many cases.

The guidance comes from an internal memo issued as United updates its systems to reflect the airport’s new name and code.

Agents are even being given a script to use, telling customers they can “look at nearby airports” if they’d rather avoid DJT.

It’s an extraordinary policy.

Airlines rarely let travelers change to a completely different airport simply because they don’t like the airport’s name.

But United appears to have decided it’s better to offer an alternative than argue with customers over one of the most politically charged airport renamings in U.S. history.

The policy appears to be tied to the transition period and is still subject to availability and agent discretion, but it has already ignited fierce reactions online from both supporters and critics of the change.
