JetBlue’s own CEO admitted it: LaGuardia is so expensive that the airline cut its schedule there from 50 flights down to just 13.

Then JetBlue turned around and bid $58.5 million to win 22 more slots at the very same airport — beating Frontier and five other bidders.

Those slots once belonged to Spirit Airlines before the carrier shut down.

JetBlue picked them up for about 33% less than Spirit had previously valued them.

Here’s the challenge: JetBlue says LaGuardia costs the airline more than $40 per passenger just to operate.

That’s one of the reasons it dramatically reduced its presence there in the first place.

So why buy more?

The answer may be the Marine Air Terminal.

JetBlue plans to move into Spirit’s former six-gate facility and spread its operating costs across nearly 25 daily departures instead of just 13, hoping the economics finally work in its favor.

It’s a bold bet on one of America’s most expensive airports—and one that could reshape JetBlue’s future in New York.
