I saw these things under the bridge. Are they there to ensure no bee hives?

Hi my boy Marvin is a 2 year old long haired Scottish fold. He growled and hissed in his litter box last night and due to this being very odd behavior from him, I monitored him all night. He was excessively licking his genital area and meowing after that too, but then he was eating and drinking normally, and was his playful self. I checked his litter periodically over the night but saw nothing. Then I saw him go to the litter box in the morning and I watched him strain. He was in there a couple of minutes and when he got out there was nothing. Then he started licking and growling at himself. I immediately took him to a reputable animal hospital nearby and they confirmed he had some stones and also crystals. His vitals were normal and so were his blood tests. They inserted a catheter and gave him pain meds, and told me he can come home today but the possibility of the stones not passing or potentially coming back is likelier without a surgery. So after some thought, we decided to go ahead and do the surgery. I never had a cat have any medical issues before. I am so panicked and I’m thankful I acted when I did. But I’m so worried about his surgery and his recovery. What do I expect? Is it a complicated surgery? They are neutering him too. I just want my baby back.
