Just days after the Justice Department subpoenaed New York Times reporters over leaked stories about the security capabilities of Trump’s new Air Force One, the president says the aircraft will soon be taken out of service to be “maxed out.”

Speaking after returning from the FIFA Club World Cup final, Trump said the Boeing 747 donated by Qatar already has “a lot of capability,” but confirmed it will undergo about a month of additional upgrades.

The timing is notable.

Earlier this month, reports claimed the aircraft lacked some of the defensive systems found on the older Air Force One fleet, including certain missile-defense capabilities.

Those reports triggered a federal investigation into the leaks, with journalists subpoenaed as investigators sought to identify their sources.

Trump has repeatedly pushed back on suggestions that the aircraft wasn’t fully mission-ready.

But his latest comments appear to acknowledge that more work is still needed before the aircraft reaches its final configuration.

The Qatari-donated 747 is serving as an interim Air Force One while Boeing continues work on the long-delayed next-generation VC-25B fleet.
