WestJet flight attendants say enough is enough—and they’re getting support from across the aviation industry.

More than 99.4% of WestJet cabin crew who voted have authorized strike action after months of stalled contract negotiations.

If no agreement is reached, they could legally strike as early as August 2.

At the heart of the dispute is a practice many passengers don’t even know exists.

The union says flight attendants perform an average of 35 hours of unpaid work every month—boarding passengers, completing mandatory safety checks, preparing the cabin, assisting during delays, and staying onboard until every passenger has deplaned.

They argue that if they’re required to be at work, they should be paid for every hour they’re on duty.

The story has sparked an outpouring of support from flight attendants at other airlines, with many saying the same pay system still exists across parts of the industry and needs to change.

WestJet says it’s committed to reaching a negotiated agreement and disputes the union’s characterization of unpaid work.
