Delta lets basic economy keep the carry-on. United charges $75 to learn that lesson at the gate.

Delta’s basic economy ticket — the cheapest fare it sells — still comes with a free full-size carry-on.

No catch, no upgrade required.

United takes the opposite approach: basic economy fliers only get a personal item, and if you show up at the gate with a real carry-on bag, you’re looking at a $75 charge on the spot.

That’s not a small gap.

Checked bags aren’t cheap either — Delta’s first bag runs $45, the second $55.

But at least you know that going in. United’s $75 carry-on fee is the kind of thing a lot of travelers only find out about when they’re already standing at the gate, watching an agent take their bag.

Delta doesn’t enforce any of this with gate checks or bag sizers. Its basic economy restrictions live somewhere else entirely — no miles earned, no upgrades, no changes, last group to board. But your carry-on stays yours.

United’s making a different bet: charge for flexibility, and charge again for the bag you already packed.
