Spirit may be gone, but its biggest hub is getting busy again.

After Spirit Airlines shut down in May, around 17,000 employees lost their jobs and Fort Lauderdale lost its largest airline, which carried nearly a quarter of the airport’s passengers.

JetBlue has moved quickly to fill that gap.

The airline has already added eight new nonstop routes, with six more on the way, and plans to grow to 150 daily departures from Fort Lauderdale by this winter.

It has also confirmed it’s hiring former Spirit employees and says their applications are being prioritized.

JetBlue’s CEO said the airline had been preparing for Spirit’s collapse for months.

While JetBlue isn’t promising Spirit’s ultra-low fares, it says passengers will get free Wi-Fi, snacks, seatback screens, and more legroom instead.
