“We need to get that grounded immediately.”
That’s what pilots reportedly told a passenger after she showed them a photo of a crack on a United 777 sitting nearby.
The woman, Lauren Self, was flying Southwest out of San Francisco when she says she snapped a picture of a 30-year-old United Boeing 777-200 before it departed for Chicago.
She claims she showed it to her own flight crew, who were alarmed enough to try to get United’s ground staff to pull the plane back.
They couldn’t reach anyone in time.
The plane took off.
The photo exploded online, with thousands questioning whether United let a damaged jet fly.
But aviation experts and mechanics quickly pushed back, saying what looked like a crack was likely just a decal or paint line on a non-structural panel — a common optical illusion in photos taken from a distance.
United hasn’t commented.
No regulator has opened an investigation.
