China has successfully recovered the first-stage booster of its Long March 10B rocket following its maiden launch, marking the country’s first controlled recovery of an orbital-class reusable rocket booster.
Unlike SpaceX’s Falcon 9, which lands vertically on deployable landing legs, China’s booster was recovered using landing hooks that allowed it to be captured by a suspended sea-based net.
Reusable rocket technology has the potential to significantly reduce launch costs by enabling expensive boosters to be recovered, refurbished, and flown again instead of being discarded after a single mission.
Chinese officials say this achievement supports the country’s long-term goals of expanding commercial launch capabilities, deploying more satellites, and advancing future lunar and deep-space exploration missions.
While the successful recovery represents a significant milestone, the booster’s ability to be rapidly refurbished and reused will ultimately determine how competitive China’s reusable launch system becomes.
